Car Explosion At Travis Air Force Base Being Treated As Terrorism

Authorities are treating Wednesday's attack on Travis Air Force base as an "act of terrorism." A vehicle carrying propane tanks burst into flames after crashing through the front gate of the base which is located about 55 miles northeast of San Franciso. The driver, who was not identified but described as a civilian, was the only fatality in the explosion. Investigators believe that the driver intentionally started the fire after he breached the gate.

Security officials quickly responded to the incident and said there was no further threat to the base or surrounding community.

The FBI is working with the Air Force's Office of Special Investigations in the on-going investigation. Travis Air Force base released a statement on Thursday saying they "will continue to work hand-in-hand with them through the investigative process."

I am extremely proud of how our first responders quickly addressed the situation to keep Travis and the surrounding area out of harm’s way. We are fortunate to have enduring relationships with federal and local law enforcement, and will continue to work hand-in-hand with them through the investigative process

Travis Air Force base is home to around 7,000 active military personnel and around 3,700 civilians.
