But the Play of the Game — one of the greatest defensive plays of the season — was authored in the eighth inning by Brayan Pena, subbing at first base for the injured Joey Votto.
Pena dives to his left to snare Matt Holliday's sharply-hit fair ball about 15 feet beyond the first-base bag. From his belly on the foul line, Pena tosses a blind, no-look "option pass" to a covering Jonathan Broxton. Every NFL quarterback would be proud of Pena's Houdini-like magic.
